How we check TTS tools
A useful comparison must separate playback from downloadable generation, free trials from recurring allowances, and product access from commercial licensing.
Source hierarchy
- Official pricing, license, help, API, and privacy pages.
- The product interface while logged out and, when appropriate, on the stated free plan.
- Repeatable audio tests using the same text.
- Third-party reviews only for context, never as the sole source for plan rights.
Facts checked for each tool
- Whether an account or payment card is required.
- Per-request, daily, weekly, and monthly limits.
- Whether playback, MP3/WAV export, and project storage are separate features.
- Plan-specific commercial-use, attribution, watermark, and redistribution terms.
- Languages, voice controls, accessibility, privacy, and deletion behavior.
Audio test script
“On July 20, Dr. Rivera reviewed version 2.5 of the API. The project cost $1,249.50, served users in São Paulo and Zürich, and included the acronym UNESCO.”
This sample exposes problems with dates, decimals, currency, abbreviations, names, multilingual words, pauses, and sentence-level prosody. Subjective voice-quality scores should be labeled as editorial judgment and accompanied by an audible sample before being treated as verified.
Update policy
